DataShoal Privacy Notice

Version 1.1 · Last updated October 7, 2026

This notice explains how North Coast Shellfish LLC, which offers DataShoal, handles the personal information it collects through datashoal.io, blog.datashoal.io, its forms, and DataShoal subscriptions.

What we collect, and why

If you fill in an interest form: your name, email address and company, the growing area you work, and your answers to the form's questions. Depending on the form, those can include your role, the species you grow, the size of your farm and harvest, your costs, how you heard about us, what you think of the price, and a phone number if you choose to give one. The forms save answers as you type, so we may receive answers from a form you started but did not send. We use them to understand demand, to shape the product, and to email you about State of the Bay for your bay, which the form asks you to agree to.

If you send us feedback on a report: your answers, and which report you are responding to.

If you use the contact form on the blog: your name, email address and message.

If you subscribe: your name, email address and company, the waterbodies you subscribe to, the addresses you ask us to send reports to, and your payment method. Stripe, our payments provider, collects and holds your payment details, and we never see your full card or bank account number. Stripe also records that you accepted our Terms of Service, and when.

If you write to us or reply to a report: your correspondence, which we keep as ordinary business records.

If you share farm data with us: that data is governed by the separate terms you accept for it, not by this notice.

Our websites

Our websites set one cookie of their own, ds-mode, which remembers whether you chose the light or dark display so the choice carries between datashoal.io and blog.datashoal.io. It holds only that choice, lasts a year, and is not used to identify or track you. The same choice is also kept in your browser's local storage, which stays on your device. We count visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which sets no cookies. The form pages load forms from Tally, and you pay on Stripe's checkout page; each works under its provider's own privacy policy. We do not track visitors across other websites, so a browser's Do Not Track signal changes nothing here.

Who processes it

We use a few services to run DataShoal, and the information above passes through them: Stripe (payments, subscriptions, and the record that you accepted our Terms), Resend (delivering report emails), Google Workspace (our email, and the spreadsheet our form answers are copied to), Tally (the interest and feedback forms; made and hosted in the EU), Formspree (the blog's contact form), and Cloudflare (hosting our websites and counting visits). Backups of our own computers, kept on storage we control, also hold copies.

What we do not do

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with anyone beyond the services above, except where a law requires.

Email, and how to stop it

If you subscribe, we email you the weekly report, and Stripe emails you about your payments, such as a payment that failed. If you filled in an interest form, we email you only about State of the Bay for your bay. To stop any email from us, reply and say so, or write to [email protected]. To stop the weekly report, reply to it, or cancel your subscription in the Stripe customer portal.

How long we keep it

We keep your information while you subscribe or stay in touch with us. If you ask us to delete your personal information, we do so within 60 days, or sooner where a law requires. Copies in our backups are removed as those backups age out. Stripe keeps its own payment records for as long as the law requires of it. Farm data you share follows the separate terms you accept for it, including what deletion removes.

Your choices

To see, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you, or to ask anything about this notice, email [email protected].
